Go Deeper: Finding Identity in Surrender

Yesterday morning, I broke down in my kitchen.

Lately, I’ve been wrestling with this thought: Maybe I’m being too Christian. Maybe I’m becoming overly spiritual. Those whispers crept in until they began shaping how I saw myself. I questioned whether I was losing my identity, whether I even had a personality outside of my faith.

And as I stood there cleaning, tears came.

But in the middle of my struggle, God planted Romans 12:2 in my heart:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Suddenly, I realized this wasn’t madness. It wasn’t me “losing myself”. It was the process of transformation. It was the warfare between the old me and the new me He birthed.

The enemy wants us to believe that walking closely with Christ strips us of our uniqueness. That surrendering to God makes us bland, empty, or “too much.” But here’s the truth: in surrender, you don’t lose yourself, you find yourself.

What I was feeling in that kitchen was the tension of transformation. The old me wanted to cling to familiarity, to hold onto the world’s measure of worth. The new me was being renewed, invited to release what no longer fit.

That tension doesn’t mean something is wrong with us. It means something holy is happening within us.

Later, as I went outside to continue cleaning, still replaying these thoughts in my head, God spoke again:

“Jurnee, go deeper.”

I froze with the water hose still in my grasp. I knew what He meant. Stop circling the surface of your doubts. Stop rehearsing lies that you’ve already been freed from. Go deeper into Me. Go deeper into surrender. Go deeper into trust.

And in that moment, awe overcame me. God wasn’t just connecting with me; He was inviting me into deeper intimacy.

Your identity isn’t erased in Christ; it’s redeemed in Christ. Who you are becomes clearer because it’s no longer built on shaky ground, but on the eternal foundation of God’s truth.

The world will tell you that your identity is in your achievements, your personality, your image, your independence, your connections, your job, your big house and fancy car. But Christ reminds us that identity is discovered when we surrender all those things and let Him define us.

✨ If you’ve ever battled with the thought that you’re “too Christian” or “overly spiritual,” let this be your reminder: you’re not crazy, you’re being transformed. Your identity in Christ is the truest version of you. And surrender is the doorway into freedom.

✦ Reflection for You

  • Are you holding onto pieces of your “old self” out of fear of losing your identity?

  • What lies has the enemy whispered about who you are in Christ?

  • Where might God be inviting you to go deeper?

✦ Prayer

Father God, Thank You for Your presence in my life. Thank You for walking with in my doubts and struggles. Thank You for revealing that my identity in who You are is the truest form of who You say I am. I ask that You keep transforming me and renewing my mind. I ask that You keep me molding me to be more like Christ because He is the model and the standard. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.
