Not Interested

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – John 10:10 (ESV)

Over the weekend, I watched a movie called Highest 2 Lowest. In it, the antagonist David King (played by Denzel Washington) and the protagonist Yung Felon (played by A$AP Rocky) share two unforgettable conversations in the last 40 minutes.

Now, I had already picked up on the not-so-subtle biblical themes sprinkled throughout the film, but those final conversations made it loud and clear what the director, Spike Lee, was really trying to convey. Without spoiling it for anyone, the exchanges painted a vivid picture of good vs. evil, God’s power vs. the enemy’s power struggle.

One line that stuck with me was when Felon makes a Stevie Wonder reference and King shoots back, “You ain’t the sunshine of my life, that’s for sure.” In other words: he represents the darkness.

Another chilling line from King: “You hollow on the inside. You lonely on the inside. You quiet on the inside. You hurt on the inside. That’s what I wanna feel. That’s what I wanna see. That’s what I wanna know. I wanna know what’s inside you.”

Wow. Chills again.

But it reminded me of something powerful: we serve a God who sees us for who we truly are. He doesn’t just look at the surface. He wants the raw, unfiltered, even ugly parts of us—the hurt, the loneliness, the quiet parts we try to hide. He can handle it.

In the movie, King says to Felon: “I’m a chance giver.” He tries to give Felon a way out, a chance to turn things around. But Felon resists, insisting on doing things his own way. Later, we see him begging for King’s help, dressing it up to look like a good deal. But here’s the truth:

  • All money ain’t good money.

  • All attention ain’t good attention.

  • All deals ain’t good deals.

If we wait on God, if we trust His timing instead of striving and scrambling in our own strength, we can avoid so many of the enemy’s traps. Patience with God saves us from heartbreak, striving, and settling for less than His best.

To the enemy and all the false opportunities he tries to dress up as blessings, I say… Not Interested.

Prayer 🙏

Lord, thank You for being the true Giver of life. Help me to recognize the enemy’s traps and refuse what looks good but isn’t from You. Teach me patience as I wait for Your timing, and strengthen me to lean on Your wisdom instead of my own striving. I choose to walk in the abundant life You’ve promised and declare today—Not Interested in anything less than You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
