Under Renovation

In my doom-scrolling on social media, I’ve discovered a new obsession: watching people take old, beat-up furniture and somehow turn it into something new. I’ll sit there for way too long watching them strip away broken pieces of wood, sand everything down until it’s smooth, add Bondo glue to fill in the cracks, and then reveal a piece that looks nothing like what it started as.

It’s weirdly satisfying to see something ugly, discarded, and labeled as “trash” get a second chance. A whole new identity.

You following me yet?

The more I watch, the more I realize something: I’m not all that different from that busted dresser on Facebook. None us really are. We all come with cracks, rough edges, and areas we’d honestly rather cover up with a new coat of paint and pretend aren’t there.

But then Jesus came along, took a look and said, “Yeah, I can work with that.”

When we were saved and declared Jesus Christ as Lord, we were made new. Brand new. Not “lightly refurbished” like a marketplace deal.

Let that sink in for a bit.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
— 📖 2 Corinthians 5:17

Here’s the part we don’t always realize: that refurbishing process doesn’t happen overnight. It would be nice if we accepted Christ and instantly became that judgeless, patient, gracious, and self-controlled version of ourselves… but I don’t know about you, I still have days where the “old me” taps me on the shoulder and tries to get me to return to old ways and habits.

Growth takes time. God strips away what’s broken, sands down what’s rough, fills in the cracks with His grace, and strengthens the places we thought would always stay weak. Some days you’ll feel like progress is happening and you’re pushing forward. Other days you’ll feel like you’re standing on the wrong side of a “before and after” picture.

Some truth though?

The old you is no longer “you.” You’re not damaged goods. You’re just under renovation.

And God is really, really good at renovations.

🙏 A Short Prayer

Father,
Thank You for seeing beyond my cracks, my rough edges, and the parts of me I’d rather hide. Thank You for making me new in Christ and for being patient with my process. Help me trust the work You’re doing in me even when I can’t see the final picture yet. Renew my mind, reshape my heart, and strengthen my spirit as You continue to transform me.
Amen.
